Summit Drive In Theatre - Glade Spring VA
Growing up in rural Southwest, VA during the late 50's and 60’s
was like the lyrics from the Song Small Town Saturday Night
“There's an Elvis movie on the Marquee sign.”
“We've all seen at least three times”
...........................
“We're going ninety miles an hour down a dead end road''
”What's the hurry son...where you going to go?”
In the small town of Glade Spring and the rural countryside the Marquee sign was the Summit Drive-In. The Summit drew kids from Saltville, Rich Valley and Glade Spring. Being miles from TV and radio it was difficult to know what was in the “outside world". The significance of the Summit became all the more important. Besides a place to see movies it became a place to socialize, get news, hang out and date. It has been said that going to the movie with your girlfriend did not mean that you actually got to see the movie. The Summit was famous for many things including its July 4 fireworks display and its hot dogs. On occasion the Drive-in also had liveshows on top of the concession stand. Such as the cowboy Lash Larue, country bands as Cousin Zeke and his Balladeers.
